Community Day Celebrates Kaipātiki (formerly Parakai Reserve)
Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara through its charitable arm Whiti Ora o Kaipara is excited to deliver ‘Kaipātiki ki Kaipara’, a free community day for all the whānau, this Saturday 13 April 9am to 4pm at Kaipātiki (formerly the Parakai Recreation Reserve) in Parakai.
The theme for the event is ‘wellness’, drawing inspiration from Kaipātiki as a space for relaxation, rejuvenation and connection to the natural environment. There will be something for everyone, with a range of food, craft, education and service stalls, fun activities, and music and entertainment from local performers.
Along with delicious local kai including venison burgers and kaipātiki (flounder) there will be a live hangi exhibition on display, led by Reweti Marae’s ‘Pit Master’, Wikiriwhi Ratima.
To highlight whai oranga (healthy activity), health and education providers such as Te Ha Oranga, Waitemata DHB, Life Education, Plunket New Zealand and Lumino the dentists will be on hand providing information and services.
The event is also a chance for people to learn about the history and special features of the reserve and plans for improving community access and restoring natural features.
Ngaire Lyall, Marae and Whanau Development Manager, says the event is delivered with the support of Te Poari o Kaipātiki ki Kaipara, the co-governance entity responsible for the management of the reserve, comprising membership from Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara and Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland Council).
“The event is about celebrating the past, present and future of Kaipātiki and sharing the new co-governance relationship with the community. Kaipātiki is a very special place for Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara and the local community. What makes this event especially meaningful is that the project team pulling the day together are all Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara descendants,” says Ngaire.
“Come along to be entertained and to experience the diversity and hospitality of the South Kaipara.”
In keeping with the wellness theme, the event is zero-waste, smoke-free and alcohol-free.
