Festival of Innovation that’s good for the world

Techweek Dunedin 2019

(Dunedin, 11 April 2019) Innovation, imagination, discovery and collaboration will be the defining features of Techweek Dunedin, which runs from Monday 20 May until Sunday 26 May, as part of the national Techweek19 programme.

Focusing on innovation that’s good for the world, the week-long tech showcase will feature over 40 local events for all ages.

From keynote speakers, panel discussions, business seminars and demonstrations, to student workshops, women in tech and family-focused activities, the programme offers plenty to fascinate and entertain. Events fall under two key categories: those that build capability and those that inspire the next generation, with highlight events showcasing all areas of the sector with a focus on inclusion and diversity.

Techweek19 Dunedin Regional Coordinator, Lauren Saker, says, “We have a great line-up of events in over 25 venues across the city, including over 60 speakers (international, national and local). People can submit new events until Monday 15 April and we’re publishing the full calendar on 1 May.”

A popular highlight of Techweek Dunedin is the family-friendly Dunedin TEXpo, 11am-3pm Saturday 25 May. TEXpo is a joint event hosted by Otago Polytechnic and the University of Otago across two sites on Union St East: The Otago University Business School, and the Otago Polytechnic Hub. It will showcase interactive displays and stalls from local tech companies, Otago Polytechnic and University of Otago, e.g. robots, Minecraft, and drones; hi-tech innovations that staff and students have produced or are using; and hands on interactions with a variety of new and emerging technologies.

TEXpo is also a great opportunity to browse active areas in Dunedin's growing tech sector and talk to people from a range of companies succeeding globally. People can explore tech career options and see how research can be turned into commercial reality.

Dunedin City Council’s Enterprise Dunedin Director, John Christie, says, “Techweek19 creates a great opportunity to find out how to get involved in one of the city’s most exciting and fastest growing sectors. We hope these events will inspire people to see new possibilities in creative technologies that can improve all our futures - for good.”

Another key event this year is the 'Medtech - Good for the World?' panel discussion and showcase hosted by the University of Otago, from 6-8pm, Monday 20 May. With a new state of the art Dunedin hospital due to be built over the next 10 years, interest in this area will be high.

University of Otago Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard Blaikie, says, “The University of Otago is very pleased to be able to partner with Enterprise Dunedin and others in helping to bring Techweek19 events to the city. The future growth and development of Dunedin will combine the best of our world-leading educational institutions and the weightless, high-value tech industries that are already growing strongly here.

“The main MedTech Showcase event brings our strengths in biomedical and assistive technologies to the fore, and the TEXpo that will be held in our newly renovated Business School broadens this to give tasters of many other exciting developments from across our southern technology ecosystem.”

The full programme will be available on the Techweek19 website by 1 May and will have events covering a wide spectrum of topics and interests including brewing tech, television sports graphics, women in tech, electric vehicles and much more.
