Mayor Lester congratulated for Welcome Home initiative
Refugee-led NGO, ChangeMakers Resettlement Forum Congratulates Mayor Justin Lester for his Welcome Home initiative
ChangeMakers Resettlement Forum commends Mayor Justin Lester for his ‘Welcome Home’ policy, which would give new former refugees free access to a range of Wellington activities and services.
The announcement was made at Wharewaka function centre, where Mayor Lester and other Labour Party council candidates launched their campaigns for the local government elections in October.
This initiative will go a long way to combat social isolation, increase participation in physical activity, and break down the cost barriers associated with recreation for our refugee background communities.
ChangeMakers Chairperson Ibrahim Omer says that the announcement demonstrates that the Mayor considers the needs of refugee background communities.
“Integrating into a new city can be tough for anyone, especially former refugees,” says Ibrahim.
“It’s important that our representatives go the extra mile to make former refugees feel welcome and included.”
“As a former refugee who found my home in this city, I’ve witnessed Justin’s commitment to our community first-hand.“
“We look forward to continued leadership that shows us we are truly welcome.”
