Rotary Responds With Supporting Ukraine Where Most Needed
Rotary New Zealand is working directly with Rotary Ukraine and being supported by a number of the Ukraine Assns. of New Zealand. Personal contact is made through an interpreter.
Rotary has a network of 62 clubs throughout the Ukraine with in excess of 1,000 volunteers. A central committee to deal with the humanitarian catastrophe was established at the outset of the war which is in daily communication to allow it to respond instantly to the ever changing needs of communities in cities and villages where there is a full-scale war. Humanitarian hubs have been set up on the western border, where humanitarian goods from Europe and elsewhere for Rotary’s network arrive daily and include medicines, medical equipment, food, clothing, linen, hygiene items, and sanitary supplies.
Last week 5 powerful diesel generators (10kW) and 9 gasoline generators with a capacity of 2.2 kW. were distributed by Rotary to Ukrainian communities and hospitals where the grid has been destroyed and the need for electricity is vital. Rotary Poland are assisting with purchases. Polish trucks cannot cross the border, so goods are transhipped at the border to Ukraine vehicles.
Unlike some other NGOs, Rotary will not make cash grants. www.rnzwcs.org
