Murder Charge Following Fatal Assault In Grey Lynn
A man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman in Grey Lynn this morning.
Emergency services were called at 8.25am after a member of the public came across the woman being allegedly assaulted by a man on Cockburn Street.
The woman was critically injured and tragically died a short time after emergency services arrived.
The man was located by police nearby and taken into custody.
"We have launched a homicide enquiry and can confirm the victim and alleged offender were known to each other," says Detective Senior Sergeant Lisa Anderson.
"While a charge has been filed, our investigation is in its early stages and we are not in a position to provide further detail at this time.
"Cordons remain in place in Cockburn Street while the forensic scene examination continues and we would like to thank the residents for their understanding.

The man is expected to appear in Auckland District Court on Monday 11 July.
