School Speed Limit Changes From Term 2

Students are back at school next week and some speed limits around Hamilton schools are changing for the start of the term.

Variable 30km/h speed limits will be introduced around 12 Hamilton schools from 28 April 2025, and they will operate during pick-up and drop-off times. Outside of these times, the speed limit will be either 40km/h or 50km/h.

These changes are in response to the Government’s new speed limit rules which have impacted roads around schools nationally.

The variable speed limits are less of an adjustment for Hamiltonians as the speed limit around schools reduced to either a permanent or variable 30km/h on 29 April 2024.

Tania Hermann, Council’s Operate and Maintain Unit Director, said the speed limit changes are a reminder to take care when driving around schools.

“Drivers should take extra care and reduce speed when driving around schools no matter the time of day to support the safety of children who may be passing through the area.”

New variable speed limit signs will clearly state when the variable speed limit applies, and electronic signs will be installed on busy roads or areas where it would be difficult for drivers to notice the signs.

New Zealand Transport Agency will fund 51% of the costs to implement these changes, and Council will pay 49%.
