Improvements To Bombay Southbound Off-Ramp To Get Underway This Month
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is about to begin works to improve efficiency and safety on the southbound off-ramp at Bombay Interchange.
Work is expected to get underway from the evening of Sunday 18 May and take 4-5 months to complete.
Planned improvements include extending the overall length of the existing off-ramp by approximately 100m at the northern end, where it leaves the motorway, and extending the length of the left turn lane on the ramp approximately 100m by cutting into the side embankment. This will help to provide capacity for future growth and reduce instances where the tail of the queue extends back onto the motorway.
Most construction will take place overnight between 9pm and 5am. Regular closures of the southbound off-ramp will be required to ensure the safety of road users and road workers during construction.
When the off-ramp is closed, motorists will be detoured via Nikau Road Interchange to the south and back. They will also have the option to exit State Highway 1 earlier at Ramarama Interchange, with electronic messaging in place to advise.
People should check the NZTA Journey Planner website (journeys.nzta.govt.nz) for up-to-date information about the works before they travel.
The planned improvements follow investigations begun in October last year and will complement the benefits from the recently completed signalisation works at Bombay Interchange and the adjacent Bombay service centre exit.
Nighttime service providers at Bombay Interchange (Z and BP service stations, KFC and McDonalds restaurants) will remain open during their normal trading hours.
NZTA thanks everyone for their patience and understanding as we undertake these important works to improve the safety and efficiency of the state highway network.
