Your History, Your Voice: Help Shape Tairua’s Heritage Offering
Whether you live in Tairua, own a property, or just love to visit, our Council wants to hear your thoughts on a potential heritage offering.
The survey, part of a wider feasibility study, aims to gauge public interest and gather ideas for a future local heritage display or facility that celebrates Tairua’s rich cultural and historical identity. The initiative has been developed in partnership with the Tairua Heritage Society and is open to residents, ratepayers and anyone with an interest in the town’s future.
This is about more than just displaying artefacts, it’s about connecting our people, past and present.
We want to know what kind of heritage offering our Tairua community wants and how it could best serve both locals and visitors.
Of particular focus is the importance of incorporating local iwi history and ensuring younger generations are engaged through education and interactivity.
The survey explores a range of questions, including whether the heritage centre is needed in the near term or as a future goal, what features it should include (such as interactive displays, digital content, iwi involvement and educational tools), and whether it should be a physical space, virtual experience, or a mix of both.
Respondents are also asked about opening hours, possible locations, and how the local community could help shape or contribute to the offering through storytelling, volunteering, or sharing resources. There’s also a section on funding preferences, inviting participants to weigh in on both admission fees and potential ratepayer contributions, with funding scenarios ranging from $250,000 to over $1.25 million.
The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and will play a key role in determining the project’s direction and viability.
The survey is open from today, Monday 19 May, until Friday 30 May.
