The Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter Undertakes 29 Life Saving Missions In April
The Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter carried out 29 life-saving missions across the Manawatu and Whanganui regions throughout April. These missions included 7 inter-hospital transfers, 1 medical event, 1 rescue mission, 6 rural/farm incidents, 4 motor vehicle accidents, and 10 miscellaneous missions.
The rescue helicopter was most frequently seen in Palmerston North, completing 6 inter hospital transfers, as well as in remote locations such as the Tararua Ranges and Ohakune.
The month began with the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter being dispatched to Palmerston North Hospital for a female who was experiencing a medical event. The patient was airlifted to Wellington Hospital for further treatment.

The following day involved the rescue helicopter being tasked to four missions. The first occurred in the early hours of the morning, when the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to Waipukurau Aerodrome for a female who had sustained significant injuries following a motor vehicle accident. The patient was airlifted to Wellington Hospital for further treatment.
Later that morning, the rescue helicopter flew to Matapu for a male who had sustained significant injuries following a motor vehicle accident. The onboard Critical Care Flight Paramedic treated the patient on scene for approximately 35 minutes before the crew swiftly transported the individual to Whanganui Hospital to receive further medical care, with a flight time of 25 minutes.
That afternoon, the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter was tasked to Whanganui Hospital for a male who was experiencing a serious medical event. The patient was flown to Wellington Hospital for further treatment.
Later that evening, the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter flew to Pongaroa for a female who had sustained significant injuries following a motor vehicle accident. The patient was treated on scene for approximately 40 minutes before being airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital for further medical treatment.
On Thursday evening, April 3rd, the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to Ohakune for a male who was experiencing a serious anaphylactic reaction. The patient was stabilised on scene and transported to Palmerston North Hospital for further treatment.
On Friday afternoon, April 4th, the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter was tasked to Woodville for a male who was in critical condition following a motor vehicle accident. The patient was extracted from the vehicle and treated on scene before being airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital for further treatment.
On Saturday evening, April 5th, the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter was tasked to Sanson for a male who was in critical condition following a motor vehicle accident. The patient was extracted from the vehicle and treated at the scene for multiple serious injuries before being flown directly to Wellington Hospital for further treatment.
On Friday afternoon, April 11th, the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to Aokautere for a female who sustained serious injuries after a fall from their bike. The patient was stabilised on scene and airlifted to Wellington Hospital for further treatment.
On Saturday afternoon, April 19th, the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the Tararua Ranges for a female who was experiencing a medical event. The patient was airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital for further treatment.
On Sunday afternoon, April 20th, the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter was tasked to the Tararua Ranges for a female who was experiencing a serious medical event. The patient was treated on scene and airlifted to Masterton Hospital for further treatment.
On Tuesday morning, April 22nd, the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter was tasked to Palmerston North Hospital for a male who was suffering from a medical event. The patient was airlifted to Wellington Hospital to receive further treatment.
On Friday afternoon, April 25th, the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter was tasked to the Tararua Ranges for a female who sustained injuries after a fall. Due to the remote location, the patient required extraction via winch. Once extracted the patient was airlifted to Wairarapa Hospital to receive further medical treatment.
That evening, the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter flew to Weber for a male who had sustained significant injuries after a farming related incident. The patient was stabilised on scene and airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital to receive further treatment.
The month concluded with the Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter being dispatched to Dannevirke Aerodrome for a female who had sustained serious injuries after a fall while horse riding. The patient was stabilised on scene and airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital to receive further treatment.
