Budget 2025: An “F” For Failing Our Children, Our Environment, And Our Future
WELLINGTON, NZ – Parents for Climate Aotearoa has expressed deep disappointment in today’s 2025 Budget announcement, labelling it an outright failure to meet the moment for climate action and intergenerational justice.
“We give this Budget an F,” said Alicia Hall, spokesperson for Parents for Climate Aotearoa. “An F for failing our children, failing our environment, failing New Zealanders, and failing to uphold our responsibilities as a nation committed to a liveable future.”
Despite mounting scientific warnings, rising emissions, and increasing climate-related disasters at home and abroad, Budget 2025 lacks the urgent investment and leadership required to transition Aotearoa to a climate-resilient, low-emissions economy.
“There’s been a lot of talk, but this Budget shows our leaders have learned nothing from the climate and weather events that have devastated our communities,” said Alicia Hall “Instead of bold action, we see short-term thinking and political cowardice.”
As part of their response, Parents for Climate Aotearoa is officially inviting all Ministers to attend their Climate School for Ministers, a non-partisan initiative designed to educate decision-makers on the science, social implications, and solutions of the climate crisis.
“If our leaders were in the classroom today, they’d be sent home with a note to their parents. If they are so dedicated to getting the basics right and doing them well then it is time they went back to school, climate school. Our Climate School will offer Ministers the chance to catch up on what they’ve clearly missed: the basics of climate responsibility, equity, and action.”
Parents for Climate Aotearoa urges all New Zealanders to read between the lines of this Budget: the costs of climate inaction are already being felt, and they are rising.
“We will not stand by while our leaders mortgage our children’s future. Budget 2025 is a failure, but we won’t stop fighting for better.”
