New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is reminding motorists to plan ahead and be prepared for disruption on the roads as heavy snowfalls are possible in the central South Island tomorrow.

MetService says periods of heavy snow are possible above 600m in Canterbury south of the Rangitata River, Queenstown Lakes District and Central Otago, from 9am tomorrow. Snow is possible as low as 400 metres in some places. Alpine passes may also be affected.

The cold conditions also bring the prospect of ice on the roads through to Friday, and freezing fog, especially on state highways in the Mackenzie Basin.

NZTA’s roading crews will be out from the early hours tomorrow morning ploughing snow or spreading grit and a de-icing agent on state highways.

NZTA urges people to think about adjusting speeds and travelling distances, being visible and avoiding sudden braking or turning movements.
