More names have been added to the Ashburton District Council ballot, two days from nominations closing.
A second-term councillor has decided to stand, while a third nomination means there will be an election in the Ashburton District’s Eastern Ward.
Nominations for the upcoming council elections close at midday Friday, August 1.
Councillor Carolyn Cameron has decided to seek a third term, becoming the ninth candidate in the Ashburton ward, and Hakatere Huts resident Gary Clancy is standing in the Eastern Ward.
Clancy will run against incumbent first-term councillor Richard Wilson and retired farmer Phill Everest, seeking to fill the two vacancies in the Eastern Ward.
Clancy said he had a few people suggest running for council, “and I thought why not give it a go”.
“I believe I have something to contribute and do something to improve things for the people in this district."
Now retired, he had a long career in public service “in various departments, operational and policy, around the country”, which included a long stint at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
He also has experience as a small business operator.
Clancy, who has lived in the district for 12 years, said something needs to be done to stop the trend of increasing rates, and he wanted improved efficiency of council services.
“I’m really worried about rates and where that’s going.
“There needs to be a much harder look at what the core services are and the nice-to-haves.”
Meanwhile, Cameron, who owns the Allenton Pharmacy, had been weighing up her decision, having previously said she had to make sure she could fully commit to another three years.
“Things have lined up, and I can commit to seeking another term.
“I feel there is still scope for my input and things I want to achieve,” she said.
Cameron joins eight other candidates in seeking the five seats in the Ashburton Ward.
