Palmerston North Community Urges Council To Uphold City's Values At Critical Meeting
PALMERSTON NORTH, NZ -A coalition of Palmerston North residents will present a petition with over 2,000 signatures to the City Council on Wednesday, September 3rd, urging the adoption of an ethical procurement policy and a public call for a ceasefire in Gaza. The presentation, scheduled for 9:00 AM in the Council Chambers, is seen by supporters as a crucial test of the council's commitment to its stated values of equality, human rights, and multiculturalism.
The petition, spearheaded by a diverse group of community members, including faith leaders, students, and citizens from various ethnic backgrounds, argues that the council's financial decisions must align with ethical principles and international law.
"This is not about foreign policy; it is about good governance and our city's soul," says Katrina Mitchell-Kouttab spokesperson for the petitioners. "The council has a responsibility to ensure our ratepayer money is not spent with companies complicit in human rights violations. This is a matter of moral and financial risk management."
The petition also highlights Palmerston North's identity as a "welcoming city" and its strong sister city relationships. Supporters say that a failure to act on a humanitarian crisis would betray the very principles the city prides itself on. The community is watching to see if this council will represent all its people and demonstrate leadership in fairness and care before the upcoming elections.
A significant turnout of community members is expected to attend the meeting, many of whom will be wearing cultural or religious attire to visibly demonstrate the diversity of the support.
"We are here to show the council that the voice of the people is united,” Vivienne Porzsolt reiterated. "We are hopeful they will listen and take a principled stand for humanity, justice, and social cohesion."
