'Wellington Community Council' ???
In an innovative approach Thomas Morgan, Wellington City Council Eastern Ward Candidate is suggesting that the name of the city council be changed to ‘Wellington Community Council’.
“While out on the hustings it has been suggested that the council is not focused on the people and with a reported council satisfaction rating of 27% something is wrong somewhere. It seems obvious that some sort of realignment is needed and this is possibly a good starting point.
“Despite territorial authorities functioning within defined geographical boundaries their actual purpose of course is to serve the community and emphasising that with a more user friendly name may help develop a more inclusive culture between the council and the public,” he said.
He admitted that the adjustment may be taken as a token gesture with higher priorities to deal with; nevertheless he still wonders if one small step in the right direction is much better than none.
“I am just providing a suggestion. It is up to the community what sort of culture it would like to propagate and if a ‘community’ council is more preferable to a more geographically focused ‘city’ one. If the idea catches on perhaps other communities around the country might follow suit.” He said.
Morgan noted that a formal name change may well require adjustments to legislation and more of Morgan’s ideas can be found here: - https://www.facebook.com/VoteThomasMorgan and of course he would rather like the No.1 vote of Wellington’s Eastern Ward residents.
