Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ)’s National Council has today elected Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz as its new Vice President.

This follows Hutt City Mayor Campbell Barry resignation as Vice President. With his term set to finish on 11 October, Campbell made the decision to support continuity in LGNZ’s leadership at a crucial time. He will remain as a member of National Council, supporting the President and Vice President.

LGNZ president Sam Broughton thanked Campbell for his service to his community and to wider local government.

“Campbell has been a strong and effective voice for local government.

“I want to acknowledge his future-focused leadership and for making space for continuity in leadership at LGNZ, as the sector grapples with big issues such as central government-imposed rates caps.”

Rehette Stoltz is in her second term as Mayor of Gisborne District Council – the first female Mayor in the council's 148-year history - while also serving as a Regional Sector Representative on LGNZ’s National Council.

She says she is pleased to be supporting local government as Vice President during a ‘tough’ election period.

“Being part of local government is a privilege and I'm thoughtful there's a lot of work to do to inform the public about the value of councils and the impact of their decisions on everyday lives.”
