“Gordon Wilson Flats Defenders Need To Put Up Or Shut Up”: Scott ‘Scoot’ Caldwell
Wellington Mayoral candidate Scott “Scoot” Caldwell says it’s time to stop dancing around the future of the Gordon Wilson Flats.
“The Gordon Wilson Flats have been a decaying eyesore for more than a decade,” Scoot said. “If people really believe they can do something cheaper and better with it, then put your money where your mouth is. Otherwise, put up or shut up. Wellington’s had enough of this endless talk.”
Scoot said it was telling that defenders of the building only started talking about reuse when demolition became real. “Where were they when it sat rotting on the hill for years? It’s classic pearl-clutching. Let’s be honest — if someone tried to build the Gordon Wilson Flats today, these same people would be the first ones to oppose it.”
He said Wellington needs to stop getting stuck in the past. “We don’t need more hand-wringing about derelict concrete blocks. We need housing and infrastructure that actually works for Wellingtonians today and tomorrow. The Gordon Wilson Flats are finished — time to move on and build something better.”
