Waikato Farmer Saved Twice By Rescue Helicopter Leads Fundraiser To Give Back

15th September 2025
Waikato farmer Geoffrey knows firsthand the life-saving power of the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter - he’s been rescued not once, but twice.
The first incident occurred one summer afternoon when Geoffrey was thrown from his quad bike as it rolled over him three or four times. Though he managed to upright his quad and return home, he collapsed shortly afterward.
A delay in reaching the hospital could have been fatal. Fortunately, the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter arrived swiftly at Geoffrey’s remote property, bringing life-saving equipment, expert rescue personnel, and trauma-trained paramedics. He was airlifted to hospital where he spent two months recovering from severe internal bleeding, and critical injuries to his kidney, spleen, and pancreas. Surgeons advised him to avoid physical work for 18 months.
After his recovery period ended, Geoffrey joined a friend on a pig hunt deep in the bush. On the way back, he tripped on tree roots and fell, shattering his ankle and breaking his tibia. His companion constructed a makeshift splint and crutch, but Geoffrey fainted each time he tried to stand. Due to the remote location, the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to his aid, transporting him to hospital in just eight minutes - a journey that would have taken over 90 minutes by road.
“You don’t expect to be rescued once, let alone twice. I’m ever so grateful to the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter,” says Geoffrey.
Now, 14 years later and fully recovered with no further accidents, Geoffrey and his wife Johanna are rallying their community to support the service that saved his life. For the second consecutive year, they are hosting a cross-country fundraising event: Maungahau Lodge: Walk for a Cause.
Last year’s event drew around 150 walkers, with participants praising the stunning views and seamless organisation.
“The walk, the views, and the opportunity to support the wonderful Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was amazing. Thank you Maungahau Station,” said one participant, Jenny.
Both Geoffrey and Johanna couldn’t be more grateful to the rescue helicopter service. They’re committed to continuing this fundraising initiative as a way of giving back and ensuring others can rely on this life-saving service when they need it most.
The charity walk winds through their beautiful farmland in Wharepuhunga, South Waikato, offering stunning views of Pureora Forest Park, the Waikato Basin, and beyond.
It takes place on Saturday, 18 October at 9:00 AM, with check-in opening at 7:30 AM for all participants joining the 3km or 10km trails.
Tickets are now live, with prices varying based on the date of purchase with Early Bird, Standard, and Late Admission options available. All children under 14 years are $15 and must be accompanied by an adult.
All proceeds go directly to supporting your Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
