International Day Of The Older Person

Grey Power New Zealand Federation proudly joins people across the country and around the world in recognising International Day of Older Persons on 1 October — a special occasion set aside by the United Nations to honour the invaluable role older people play in our families, communities, and society.

With over 30,000 members across more than 65 associations, Grey Power is deeply committed to ensuring older New Zealanders are respected, supported, and able to enjoy fulfilling lives with dignity.

“This is a time to pause and celebrate the experience, generosity and care that older people bring to every part of life,” said the National Grey Power President Gayle Chambers. “It’s also a time to reflect on how we can better support the health, independence, and wellbeing of our older citizens — not just today, but every day.”

Grey Power is calling on central and local government leaders to continue improving policies that impact seniors — including accessible healthcare, safe and suitable housing, transport, fair cost of living, digital inclusion, and preparedness for emergencies.

The Federation is also encouraging communities and families to mark the day in meaningful ways — sharing lunch, offering help with technology, visiting a neighbour, baking something special, or simply spending time together. Thoughtful gestures can go a long way toward reducing loneliness and reminding our elders how valued they are, and how much they have to offer.

As the world embraces the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing, Grey Power renews its commitment to helping build a country where older people are not only cared for, but also celebrated for their wisdom, resilience, and contributions.

This 1 October, let us all show our appreciation — through kindness, conversation, and connection — for the seniors who have given so much, and who continue to enrich the fabric of life in New Zealand.
