St Peters Social Justice Group present the Democracy and Health hui to be held in Wellington on 2 October, a discussion with leading experts on the state of our public health system and the values underpinning our democracy. This hui is very topical given the strikes by doctors and nurses across the country and the Healthy Futures (Pae Ora) Amendment Bill and Electoral Amendment Bill select committee hearings held this September.

Open to the public, the Democracy and Health hui will examine these issues in the context of a fair and just society. The hui will be hosted by Emma Sproul, Living Wage organiser and social worker for Wellington City Mission and will feature three special guest speakers outlining their thoughts.

The speakers are Peter Boshier, former New Zealand Chief Ombudsman; Dr Ganesh Ahirao, (aka Ganesh Nana) economist and volunteer, most recently Chair of the now disestablished Productivity Commission Te Kōmihana Whai Hua o Aotearoa; and Dr Carwyn Jones, Honorary Adjunct Professor at Te Kawa a Māui the School of Māori Studies at Victoria University of Wellington and a Fellow of Te Apārangi the Royal Society of New Zealand.

The hui has been organised by the St Peter’s on Willis Social Justice Group. Since 2014, this group of parishioners have worked for social justice in New Zealand, holding hui and making submissions to government.

The group’s chair, Gail Duncan, said: “In terms of achieving a fair and just society our Bill of Rights Act states that all New Zealanders have the right to vote, and the health sector needs to be able to engage with and deliver services to all sectors of society in every region of New Zealand.”

Come along to korero on Democracy and Health on Thursday 2 October at St Peter’s Anglican Church, 211 Willis Street, doors opening at 5pm. Speakers and livestreaming will commence from 5:30 pm and finish at 7 pm. Media are welcome.
