Road Rebuilding And Resurfacing Works - SH1 Whangarei Central

As the summer maintenance season gets underway, you’ll notice NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) contractors rebuilding and resurfacing sections of State Highway 1 (SH1) through Whangārei central from late October.
In Whangārei central, we have four sections of asphalting roadworks planned:
- Resurfacing at the SH1/Central Ave intersection is scheduled over six nights, from Sunday 19 October to Wednesday 29 October. No works Sunday 26 or Monday 27 October.
- In late November, our team will return for six shifts to rebuild the road alongside Kensington Sports Park. (Dates TBA.)
- We’ll wrap up early in December, with two nights of rebuild/resurfacing works between Cheviot Street and Fourth Avenue. (Dates TBA.)
- Early January 2026, we’ll be resurfacing near Russell Road for one night only. (Date TBA.)
Work will take place overnight from, 9pm – 5am, Sunday to Thursday nights, to minimise disruption.
Stop/go traffic management and a 30km/h temporary speed limit will be in place during the works.
Travel delays are expected to be less than 5 minutes.
Please treat our crews with kindness and respect. Reduce your speed, adhere to the temporary speed limits and follow the directions of traffic management staff and signs.
Access for residents and emergency services will be maintained throughout the works.
Rebuilding the road, which often involves replacing all or most of the structural road layers, improves the longevity of the network, the resilience and ultimately the safety and efficiency for all road users.
We do our best to stick to planned dates for state highway maintenance work, but weather, unforeseen circumstances, or other factors may cause changes. Before heading out, check the NZTA Journey Planner for the latest updates.
