Hamilton’s new mayor and councillors have been officially sworn in at a ceremony held in Civic Square today (Wednesday 22 October).

The event began with a poowhiri and mihi by Hamilton City Council’s Kaumatua, Tame Pokaia, followed by the inaugural Council meeting opened by Chief Executive Lance Vervoort.

Mayor Tim Macindoe welcomed new and returning councillors, and outlined his vision for the triennium ahead and Hamilton’s future.

“It was an honour to be officially sworn in as Mayor of Hamilton today, alongside a strong and dedicated team of councillors.

“We share a common duty to govern responsibly, justly, and with integrity. Those who preceded us have helped shape Hamilton over many years, and now it is our turn to build upon that legacy and to meet the responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities that lie ahead.

“As I said through my election campaign and I reiterated today, my focus is on leading this Council to create a financially strong city that delivers the basics well, relieves pressure on ratepayers, and continues to invest wisely in what makes Hamilton special and supports economic growth. I value the unique skills and perspectives that each councillor brings to the table. By harnessing these and working constructively together, we will build a strong future for our city.”

Seven new councillors were inaugurated in the ceremony – Leo Liu, Rachel Karalus, Sue Moroney and Jamie Strange in the East Ward, Robbie Neha in the Kirikiriroa Maaori Ward, and Mesh Macdonald and Graeme Mead in the West Ward.

They join successfully re-elected Councillors Andrew Bydder, Anna Casey-Cox, Maria Huata, Angela O’Leary, Emma Pike, Geoff Taylor, and Sarah Thomson.

The next Council meeting will take place on Thursday 6 November.
