Victoria Bridge Glows Green For Recycling Week

Hamiltonians can catch the Victoria Bridge lit up in celebration of Recycling Week (October 20 – 26), serving as a glowing reminder to recycle better.

The annual nationwide campaign, run by Reclaim, aims to inspire people across the country to minimise their waste and practise good recycling habits.

With the long weekend ahead, residents are reminded to put their bins out by 7am on their usual collection day. There are no changes to kerbside rubbish and recycling collections due to Labour Day (Monday 27 October).

Hamilton City Council’s Head of Resource Recovery, Sarah Wilson, said it's great to see the campaign being celebrated in Hamilton Kirikiririoa as well as nationally, with monuments like Auckland's Sky Tower also lit up for the week.

“Recycling the right things, in the right way, means we send less waste to landfill.”

“If you're unsure whether an item can be recycled, type it into our bin sorter tool on our website. The tool will tell you which bin the item belongs in,” said Wilson.

Here are some easy ways you can master recycling:

  • rinse items like cans and bottles
  • remove caps from bottles and spray bottles
  • remove food residue from cardboard food packaging (like pizza boxes).

For those looking to reuse, recycle, or dispose on Monday 27 October, the facility operating hours are:

Lincoln Street Resource Recovery Centre: 9am – 4pm

Habitat for Humanity ReUse store: 9am – 4pm

Hamilton Organics Centre: 8am – 5pm
