Horowhenua’s newly elected members have officially taken office, following the inaugural Council meeting held on Wednesday 29 October at the Council Chambers. The ceremony marks the formal start of the 2025 to 2028 triennium and the moment when those chosen by the community step into their governance roles.

The meeting included the swearing-in by the Mayor and Councillors, and Te Awahou Foxton Community Board members, and the appointment of the Deputy Mayor. Whānau, friends and community members joined in person and online to witness elected members make their formal declarations to faithfully and impartially serve the people of Horowhenua.

Being sworn into office for the first time were Cr.s Nola Fox, Morgan Gray, Katrina Mitchell – Kouttab and Lani Te Raukura Ketu. Returning to Council this term is Jo Mason, who will represent the Levin Ward. Cr.s David Allan, Mike Barker, Sam Jennings, Clint Grimstone, Nina Hori Te Pa, Paul Olsen and Alan Young return to office for another term.

As part of the proceedings, Mayor Bernie Wanden appointed David Allan as Deputy Mayor for a second term. Members of the Te Awahou Foxton Community Board elected Ross Brannigan as their chairperson, and Irene Wakefield as their Deputy Chairperson.

Mayor Wanden says, “An inaugural meeting is always a proud occasion, it reminds us why we step forward to serve. Each of us is here because our community has put their trust in us, and we will work hard every day to honour that. Horowhenua has big opportunities ahead, and together we will stay focused on the things that matter most to our people.”

Chief Executive Monique Davidson says the organisation is ready to get to work alongside the new Council. “This is an exciting time for Horowhenua. Together, we have the opportunity to build on what’s been achieved and shape a strong future for our district. Our focus is on collaboration, connection and delivering positive results for our community.”

With the ceremonial duties complete, Council now turns its attention to the first ordinary Council meeting of the triennium, set for Wednesday 10 December at 11am in the Council Chambers, where work on priorities and key decisions for the district begins.
