New Traffic Signals Proposed To Improve Safety At Ulster Street Intersection
Hamilton City Council is proposing new traffic signals at the intersection of Ulster Street and Maeroa Road to reduce crashes and near misses, while making it easier to navigate for all users. The preferred design is now open for public feedback.
The preferred design includes:
- Signalising the Ulster Street/Maeroa Road intersection
- Pedestrian crossing signals on the northern and western sides of the intersection
- Partially closing the entrance to Maeroa Road east from Ulster Street (left-turn out only will remain)
- Relocating some bus stops on Ulster Street for better spacing and pedestrian access
Tania Hermann, Unit Director Operate and Maintain, said busy intersections like Ulster Street and Maeroa Road play a vital role in the city's transport network, but when they’re not working well, safety and accessibility suffer.
Between 2015 and 2024, 39 crashes were recorded at the intersection, including three serious and 13 minor injuries. Residents have also reported frequent near misses. With traffic volumes expected to grow, the risk of further incidents is increasing.
Following earlier engagement with residents east of the intersection, Council has developed a preferred design that improves safety for all road users, supports traffic flow along Ulster Street, and minimises impacts on nearby residential streets. With the preliminary draft designs already approved by the previous elected council, the next step is to hear what the community think.
Hermann said the design reflects community input and a careful assessment of three different options.
“We’ve worked closely with residents to understand the issues and explore solutions. The preferred design balances safety, access, and traffic efficiency, while protecting the character of Maeroa Road east,” Hermann said.
“We’re now asking the wider community to share their thoughts. We welcome practical suggestions that could improve the proposed design.”
The new signals will be coordinated with the nearby Forest Lake Road/Victoria Street intersection to support traffic flow along Ulster Street. Construction is planned for March/April 2026, following final design decisions.
