Declined Alcohol Application Reflects Ongoing Progress Toward A Healthier, Safer Cannons Creek
A declined application for an off-licence liquor store in Cannons Creek is welcome news to Porirua Whānau Centre.
Whānua Centre Tumu Whakarae / Chief Executive Liz Kelly says the decision marks another milestone in the Porirua suburb’s journey toward improved community wellbeing, reflecting years of collaboration and shared commitment to positive social change.
“Since I became CEO, we’ve gone from having a bar with a few pokie machines and three liquor outlets to none today in Cannons Creek,” Kelly says.
“That change speaks volumes about what’s possible when a community works together for the wellbeing of its whānau.
“So, this outcome isn’t about opposing any business; it’s about celebrating how far our community has come.”
Kelly acknowledges that alcohol remains available in nearby areas such as Waitangirua and central Porirua.
However, the reduction of local liquor outlets in Cannons Creek has already contributed to a safer, more connected environment for whānau, particularly young people.
Kelly notes the Licensing Committee’s careful consideration of the application and their recognition of the community’s aspirations for a healthier, more resilient future.
“We’re grateful to the Committee for listening to local voices and for supporting the direction our community has chosen, one that prioritises safety, health, and hope,” she says.
“We will continue to work alongside residents, community organisations, and local authorities to continue building strong, thriving whānau and ensuring positive opportunities for all in Porirua.”
