Get A Takeaway That Will Fuel Your Mind!

Temporary library to open on 17 November

Masterton District Library's new temporary library will offer takeaway choices that do more than fill stomachs.

Opening on Monday 17 November, next to Burger King and across the road from McDonald’s, the new temporary space at 45 Chapel Street, will be brimming with books, and helpful staff will be on hand to satisfy serious pangs of hunger for knowledge and information.

The temporary library is the next exciting stage in the Breathing life into our whare pukapuka project to refurbish and extend the existing library site on Queen Street.

Portacabins at the Queen Street site are being relocated, including one to Hood Aerodrome for use as office space. The site will then be fenced off in preparation for the start of construction, expected later in the year.

The project has a budget of $10.74 million, with the upgraded library expected to open in spring 2027.

Manager Library and Archive Tiffany Rawlings said the move to the temporary site had gone smoothly.

“Staff have spent this week stacking shelves and getting everything ready for our opening on Monday,” she said.

“The temporary space may be a little smaller than what visitors may be used to, but I am sure they will find what they are looking for. Also, as part of the SMART partnership of libraries, we have access to more than 800,000 items, as well as what is on our shelves.

“We’d like to thank people for their patience and welcome them back on Monday.”
