For more than four decades, Martin Gallagher has served HamiltonCity and its peoplewith distinctionand unwavering commitment.

As along servingHamilton CityCouncillor, Deputy Mayor, and Member of Parliament, Mr Gallagher hasshapedthe city’s directionand strengthened its democratic foundations.

Renowned for his integrity, humility, and respect for tradition,Mr Gallagher is knownas aguardian of civic memory and a champion of progress, inclusion, and collaboration. Known for being a mentor and historian, he has enriched Hamilton’s civic life, by ensuring the city’s heritage and values are carried forward for future generations.

Though retired from formal office, Martin continues to devote his time generously to the community, embodying a lifelong commitment to service. He serves as Patron of the Friends of Hamilton Zoo, Chair of the Waikato Health Trust, and as a National Board Member of Parent to Parent, which supports families raising a child with a disability and health impairment.

A Justice of the Peace and passionate advocate for military veterans, Martin is also a Board Member of Community Waikato Trust, a Councillor of the Automobile Association Waikato District, a trustee of Hamilton’s Community Radio Free FM, and actively involved in the Waikato Historical Society and the Hamilton Multicultural Services Trust.

Mayor Tim Macindoe said Mr Gallagher’s recognition was richly deserved. “It is a privilege to honour Martin Gallagher with this prestigious medal. Martin is widely admired for his considerable service to Hamilton and its people. His principled leadership and community spirit continueto enrich our city and inspire future generations.”

The Civic Awards celebrate those who make a tremendous difference to Hamilton in health and wellbeing, arts and culture, sport and recreation, education, and community. Recipients for 2025 were selected by the City Honours Panel, with recommendations ratified by Council on 18 September.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Monday 17 November in the Central Court Pavilion at Hamilton Gardens.

Past recipients of the HamiltonKirikiriroaMedal include Ian Foster,SirJohn Gallagher, the late John and Bunny Mortimer, Dr Beverley Clarkson and Professor Bruce Clarkson, Dr Peter Sergel, and Richard O’Brien.
