SWDC's Statement On The Occupation At Lake Whakamaru Reserve
South Waikato District Council is aware of a land occupation currently taking place at Lake Whakamaru Reserve, which is a Council-managed area.
Last week Council's Cultural Advisor travelled to the site to sit with the group and listen to the reasons behind the kaupapa, which carries deep cultural and spiritual significance for the group organising the occupation.
Council is continuing to seek a resolution via kōrero with the group, Raukawa rangatira and other district stakeholders.
“People have the right to peaceful protest and to access this Reserve. Council’s core concern right now is ensuring that the fire at the site is managed as safely as possible, and that public access and safety at the site is maintained,” South Waikato District Council Chief Executive Susan Law said.
“We understand this is a highly sensitive and layered issue for the group. We are committed to working with the group on these things and engaging in respectful and proactive kōrero.”
A ban on fires which are not fully enclosed and permitted remains in place at the site.
Lake Whakamaru Reserve is a popular recreational and camping site in summer. The site is open to members of the public during the occupation.
Council will make no further comment at this time.
