Give The Best Gift Possible – Hope For Animals Like Maverick

SPCA is calling on New Zealanders to give the ultimate Christmas present this year: the gift of safety, healing, and a second chance for animals in need.

Everyday, SPCA rescues and cares for thousands of sick, injured and vulnerable animals – and at Christmas, the need is greater than ever. Among these animals is Maverick, a tiny puppy whose life changed thanks to the kindness of New Zealanders.

When Maverick arrived at SPCA, he was trembling in fear, with his tail tucked tightly between his legs. A rough playtime accident with a larger dog had left him with devastating injuries: his face torn open and a deep bite wound threatening his survival. Emergency surgery was the only way to save him.

“Maverick’s family loved him, but they couldn’t afford the urgent vet care he needed,” says SPCA CEO Todd Westwood.

“They made the heartbreaking decision to surrender him to SPCA so he could have a chance at life.”

Thanks to generous donations, SPCA’s veterinary team acted fast. Maverick’s wounds were stitched, his pain eased, and his future secured. Today, his quirky smile – complete with a little ‘snaggle lip’ – is more than a scar. It’s a badge of courage and a symbol of kindness.

“We are so grateful for the generous of support from kiwis everyday. Making a donation this Christmas, no matter how big or small, will help more animals like Maverick receive life-saving care and find safe, loving homes,” Todd says.
