Applications Open For Waste Minimisation Fund
Gisborne District Council is calling on local innovators, schools and community groups to apply for the Waste Minimisation Fund, which supports projects that reduce waste and protect our environment.
Applications opened Monday 1 December and close Friday 27 February, with a total funding pool of $20,000 available.
Charlotte Phelps, Council’s Waste Minimisation Lead, says the fund is about empowering the community to take action.
“The best ideas for reducing waste are already in our community. This fund helps turn those ideas into reality and make a real difference for Tairāwhiti.”
Past recipients have shown how small changes can have big impact. Bella Vista Motel used its grant to set up a worm farm and signage encouraging guests to separate food scraps.
“Having a worm farm diverted an estimated 85% of our waste from landfill. It’s a simple change that reduces carbon emissions and supports a more sustainable Tairāwhiti,” says Jason Ang, owner of Bella Vista Motel Gisborne.
The fund supports projects that align with the region’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, including initiatives that reduce landfill waste and encourage ways to reuse and recycle resources.
