The Carnival For Change Celebrates Activism And Blocks Coal!
On Sunday 6 December 10 am - 6 pm at 100 Garlands Road, Ōtautahi, hundreds of people will be celebrating art and activism in the Garden City. There will be performances from some of the area's well known musicians, giant puppets, theatrical performances, free kai, stalls, workshops and more!
The Carnival is being organised by Climate Liberation Aotearoa, Coal Action Network Aotearoa, Save Our Springs, Extinction Rebellion Ōtautahi, Peace Action Ōtautahi and Ōtautahi Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa. “The problems we face are all interconnected. That's why those working for peace, protecting nature, fighting for a just transition to a low carbon world, protecting Te Tiriti, defending workers rights, and other aligned causes, are working together to help create the big allied movement that we need to create an equitable, sustainable and just world for all.” Terra Dumont
This Carnival will be supporting people blocking coal trains from getting to Lyttelton Port, Aotearoa’s largest coal port. Currently, New Zealand's biggest coal mining company, Bathurst Resources, has put in a Fast Track application to expand their mine into the Denniston Plateau and surrounding area. The 40-million year old Denniston Plateau is a rare ecosystem found nowhere else in the world. It is home to many rare and threatened animal species including roroa (great spotted kiwi), fernbirds, kākā, and the nationally endangered giant snail Powelliphanta patrickensis. In addition, this coal mine would generate at least 53 million tonnes of emissions! This mine is being proposed under the Fast Track Act which means that concerned people are shut out from the decision making process, and as such, are resorting to non-violent direction action. This Carnival will be celebrating democracy in action and the community coming together to stand up for the future they want.
“Justice for the people, the environment and the climate are entangled crises and one cannot be addressed in isolation. It is time for a fair and just society built on care and empathy for all species.”- Suzanne Hills, West Coast Resident
“The future of the Denniston Plateau is under the dire and imminent threat of wholesale destruction by Bathurst Resources via the increasingly dodgy Fast-track legislation. This is an ecosystem far too complex to restore and a landscape way too ancient to recreate. Allow it to be mined and it's gone forever.”- Suzanne Hills, West Coast Resident
“I'm really excited to see so many people and causes come together to fight for our future. For me it isn't about any one action, but about knowing that when we come together as a community that we have power. Actions like these make me feel supported and believe together we can make a better world.” - Rosie Cruickshank
