SPCA Urges Public To Make Submission In Final Days Of Greyhound Racing Ban Consultation
The New Zealand public only has two days left to make a submission on the greyhound racing ban.
SPCA is calling on all supporters, animal advocates, and dog lovers to take the opportunity tosubmit in support of the Racing Industry (ClosureofGreyhound Racing Industry) AmendmentBill as public consultation closes on January 9.
This Bill will formally end commercial greyhound racing in Aotearoa, withthefinal race day set for 31 July 2026.
SPCA is encouraging people from allwalks of lifeto have their say, whether through a detailed submission or a simple statement of support. Demonstrating widespread backing of this Bill will helpindustryattemptsto overturn or delay the closure.
Despite the fact a clear end date has been announced, the industry is continuing to fight the decision at every step, making strong public support essential to ensure the banproceedsas planned.
Submissions can be made online through parliament’s website, and consultation is open until Friday, 9 January.
Greyhound racing is in decline globally.Since New Zealand announced the decision to ban greyhound racing in 2024,more countries have followed suitwith Wales, Scotland and Tasmania announcing their own bans.
AbipartisanFederal Billto ban greyhound racing has beenintroduced in the USA and a review of the greyhound racing in Western Australiais currently underway. As one of the last few countries that still allow it,New Zealand is currently winning the race to end this dangerous practiceglobally.
SPCA Chief Scientific Officer, DrArnjaDale says multipleindependent reviews have revealed severe, ongoinganimalwelfare issues, including serious injuries, poor living conditions, and missing dogs.
"The most recent racing season saw 17 dogs die due to racing injuries, making it the deadliest season since the industry was placed on notice. These findings confirm that greyhound racing has no place in modern New Zealand,” says Dr Dale.
“Greyhounds are affectionate, calm, and make wonderful companions. They deserve better than a life of racing and risk. This transition is an opportunity to give these dogs the loving homes they deserve—and we must get it right,” DrDale says.
Greyhounds make fantasticpets. They are laid-back, love lounging around the house, and require minimal exercise. With short coats and low grooming needs, they are tidy, low-maintenance companions who form strong bonds with their families.
SPCA encourages New Zealanders to adopt a greyhoundand to make a submission to ensure greyhound racing closes. SPCA has provided information and guidance in making submissions online.
