Deputy Mayor Condemns Disruption Of Peaceful Sikh Celebration In Tauranga
Margaret Murray-Benge has condemned the protest that targeted a peaceful Sikh cultural celebration in Tauranga last Sunday, describing it as “deliberate provocation that has no place in our community.”
“After the disgraceful attempt to disrupt a peaceful Sikh parade in Auckland, it was shocking to see similar behaviour repeated here in Tauranga,” she said.
The Sikh celebration at Tauranga Boys’ High School was attended by families of all ages and was marked by music, food and joy. Murray-Benge attended the event alongside Jan Tinetti MP and Councillor Rob Taylor.
“It was colourful, welcoming and entirely peaceful, a genuine celebration of culture and community. It was something Tauranga should be proud of,” she said.
Murray-Benge said the protest was “shameful.”
“A group associated with Brian Tamaki arrived intent on disruption, shouting, posturing and attempting to intimidate a peaceful community. This was not free expression; it was deliberate provocation, and it undermines the values of respect and decency most New Zealanders hold dear.”
“At a time when violence and harm are taking a terrible toll in this country, when a baby dies every week and abuse against young people are in the headlines, we should be demanding better examples for our young men,” she said. “Teaching intimidation instead of responsibility only deepens the problems we already face.”
“Public spaces must be safe for everyone. Peaceful cultural celebrations should never require courage to attend.”
“Tauranga can - and must - do better.”
