Te Awe Closes Its Doors To Prepare For Move To New Library
Te Awe Library on Brandon Street will close permanently at 5pm on Sunday 1 March 2026 in preparation for the much-anticipated re-opening of Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui a fortnight later.

Te Awe Library opened July 2020 as the largest of three temporary libraries to continue the crucial services disrupted by the closure of Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui Central Library for re-strengthening in 2019.
- As part of the preparations, there will be some reduced services and hours at Te Awe Library and the Service Desk during February.
- From 2 Feb, weekday opening hours (Monday to Friday) will change to 9am–7pm. Weekend hours will remain the same: 9.30am–5pm.
- On 9 Feb, Te Awe will be closed for the day to facilitate movement of some collections, equipment, and furniture.
- From 10 Feb, the mezzanine floor will be closed to the public.
- Te Awe will close permanently at 5pm on Sunday 1 March for the final removal of furniture, technology, and collections into Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, and for kaimahi and the Service Desk to relocate to the new site ahead of its official re-opening on Saturday 14 March.
- Library services and programmes will continue to be available throughout the Wellington City Library network of branches and online at www.wcl.govt.nz.
- Customers are encouraged to pick up their reserves from Te Awe before Sunday 1 March, unclaimed reserves will be sent to alternate libraries for collection by request or will be available at Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui once it re-opens.
- If anyone has library items on loan when Te Awe closes, items can be returned to any other Wellington City Libraries branch.
- Customers can change the pick-up location on any reserved item after logging into your account in the library catalogue at catalogue.wcl.govt.nz.
