A state of emergency remains in place in the Whangarei District due to the storm impacts to isolated communities in Whangaruru and Oakura.

A major slip on Russell Road on Helena Bay Hill overnight and a bridge outage to the north of Oakura means there is currently no road access to these communities. Emergency Management teams are continuing work to establish alternative access routes while supporting the welfare of affected residents.

Whangarei Mayor Ken Couper says while this weather event has had a devastating impact on some communities, particularly the Whangaruru area and the beach settlement of Oakura, we are very fortunate that there has been no loss of life.

“Ensuring the wellbeing and safety of our isolated communities remains our highest priority. Yesterday, as a precaution due to the risk of landslides, 22 homes were evacuated, affecting 16 people and seven pets.

Across the wider district, many areas have coped reasonably well with the recent heavy rainfall. However, further damage has occurred, particularly along the eastern coastal areas.

“Council roading contractors are on the ground today assessing conditions, clearing trees and slips, and restoring access where it is safe to do so. This included work along the Tutukaka Coast and restoring access to Whananaki.”

He says Council’s current priorities remain focused on:

• supporting the welfare of people in the hardest-hit areas, and
• restoring safe road access to Oakura.

“A significant slip remains on Russell Road on the Helena Bay Hill. This site requires a geotechnical assessment before any clearance can safely occur.

To support access into Oakura, two excavator crews and a grader have been deployed to open a secondary access route, allowing lifeline access and emergency supplies to reach the community.

Once access is re-established, rapid building assessment teams and geotechnical engineers will be deployed to assess damaged buildings and land in Oakura. Skip bins have already been provided to support residents in removing flood-damaged household items.”

Mr Couper says another major challenge in Oakura is wastewater. The system has been heavily affected, and restoration work is underway. Residents are asked to reduce their water use as much as possible until repairs are completed.

The Council would like to acknowledge the marae in the Whangaruru area, who have provided outstanding support to displaced residents, including food, warm accommodation, showers, and a safe place to stay.
