A Change To Come: Weekend Sun To Wetter Mon(day)

Covering period of Thursday 29th January - Monday 02nd February

MetService is forecasting settled weather across much of the country in the coming days, with any remaining cloud over the South Island clearing out, and just the odd shower about southern and eastern parts of the country. Most North Islanders can enjoy clear skies and warm temperatures, providing an ideal opportunity for outdoor activities.

Daytime temperatures are expected to reach the mid to high 20s, with some areas in the eastern North Island expected to reach the low 30s Thursday and Monday afternoons. Residents are advised to wear sunscreen and hats to stay protected from the sun.

MetService meteorologist Samkelo Magwala says, “MetService is expecting plenty of sunshine, providing a welcome relief for the North Island after recent severe weather events. Whether the first week of school has already got your feet itching, or it’s your last taste of freedom, this weekend is the perfect time to get out and about. However, there’s still the odd shower on the cards for places like Tairāwhiti/Gisborne, Bay of Plenty, and Coromandel, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the forecast.”

Early next week, the opposite is expected, as weather conditions become wet and windy across most areas. Western parts of the South Island are likely to see the wettest conditions, while things could be gusty over the lower and eastern South Island and lower North Island.

Magwala advises, "With most people returning to normal routines on Monday, make sure to check the forecast before setting off as rain may reduce visibility and potentially lead to increased traffic during peak hours."
