Buses To Replace Trains As KiwiRail Continue Summer Rail Upgrades
Metlink rail services will be replaced by buses over Waitangi weekend (Friday 6 to Sunday 8 February) as KiwiRail carry out planned rail infrastructure upgrades, building on progress made over the new year.
The Kāpiti Line, Hutt Valley Line and Wairarapa Line will be replaced by buses. The Johnsonville Line will continue to run as normal.
These works will include track replacements, construction on Ava Bridge and level crossing upgrades on the Wairarapa Line, as part of the ongoing rail improvements by KiwiRail and to prepare the network for faster and more frequent trains from 2028/2029.
Delays are expected, and passengers are encouraged to check bus replacing train timetables before travelling. Buses replacing trains on the Hutt Valley Line will detour due to roadworks on Ewen Bridge – travel will take longer than usual, and additional delays may be caused by traffic congestion.
Metlink and KiwiRail thank rail passengers for their patience.
Metlink passengers are advised to plan ahead using the latest travel information on the Metlink website, app, or by calling 0800 801 700.
