Verve Exhibition Brings International Tapestry Art To Taupō Museum

Handwoven works from England and New Zealand come together at Taupō Museum’s Niven Gallery in an international showcase titled Verve.
The exhibition created by the notforprofit group Tapestry Touring International runs from 21 February until 23 March.
Tapestry Touring International was formed to connect tapestry weavers from different countries and give them opportunities to collaborate, create, and exhibit their work without the financial barriers that often accompany international shows. Over its tenyear history, the group has curated exhibitions that invite artists to interpret a shared theme while celebrating the range of contemporary tapestry making.
Although tapestry weaving has a long history, it is still commonly confused with stitched works such as the Bayeux Tapestry. True handwoven tapestry is created on a loom or frame, with a vertical warp that becomes entirely concealed by the weft as the weaving progresses. Verve seeks to highlight this distinction while showcasing the different approaches weavers bring to the medium.
Museum exhibitions curator Piata Winitana-Murray is looking forward to displaying the variety of work,
“The artists in Verve are at very different stages in their careers - from firsttime exhibitors to weavers with decades of experience and international reputations. Together, their works offer thoughtful and unexpected interpretations of the exhibition’s theme.”
This Tapestry Touring International exhibition carries deep personal significance. Verve is dedicated to Lindsey Marshall, whose decadelong commitment to championing tapestry weaving alongside Jane Freear Wyld helped raise the craft’s international profile. The exhibition stands as a tribute to Lindsey’s passion and vision.
Verve runs at Taupō Museum from 21 February to 23 March. The museum is open from 10am to 4.30pm daily and entry is free for Taupō District residents with proof of address.
