Weather Update: Severe Winds Batter Wellington
- It’s been a rough night and it’s still blowing very hard.
- If you have to commute this morning, take great cares on the roads.
- People should drive very carefully – there could be trees, branches and slips on the road.
- Metlink has cancelled all train services till at last 10am due to potential damage to the tracks and overhead power supply.
- The Wellington City Council Contact Centre has had a busy night with multiple calls – about 50 calls and counting - about fallen trees and damage right across the city.
- Big trees came down overnight on some main roads including Glenmore Street, and Middleton Road between Tawa and Johnsonville.
- A number of reports of streetlights not working.
- So far roads on the south coast are still open – our contractors have reported there’s some driftwood and debris on low-lying parts of the roads but so far not renough to close the roads.
- Unfortunately untreated sewage has been discharged overnight via the short outfall at Moa Point due to the heavy rain – so the advice about staying away from beaches still applies.
- People should also stay away from the forested parts of the Town Belt – for example on Matairangi Mt Victoria – and other reserves due to the danger from falling trees and branches.
- Council staff and contractors have been busy overnight and will have a better idea of damage and challenges as we get daylight.
