Hutt City Council Waives Green Waste Fees To Support Clean Up
Hutt City Council is waiving fees for green waste at Silverstream Landfill for the remainder of the week and weekend to support residents affected by severe weather.
The waiver will be in place from 9am Tuesday 17 February through to the end of the weekend (6pm Sunday) and applies to clean green waste from non-commercial vehicles including cars, vans and utes with trailers.
Mayor Ken Laban says the decision will make life easier for residents during a challenging time following days of wet and windy weather.
"We know residents will want to get started on the cleanup on their properties - mucking in and clearing debris and fallen branches," says Mayor Ken.
“Not only that, we know neighbours are helping each other out and helping cleanup entire neighbourhoods.
"We've seen significant damage with trees down and debris across the city. By temporarily waiving these fees, we want to make it easier for residents to dispose of green waste safely and support the cleanup effort.
"Council contractors will continue working across the city clearing priority areas and significant debris. This is about backing our community as they work through the cleanup and get things back to normal. We're all in this together."
The fee waiver applies to:
- Clean green waste only (branches, leaves, vegetation)
- Non-commercial vehicles: cars, vans or utes with trailers
- Normal rates apply to mixed loads (waste containing non-green waste materials)
- Commercial vehicles (trucks) not eligible
Silverstream Landfill operating hours:
- Monday to Friday: 7:30am - 5:00pm
- Saturday and Sunday: 8:00am - 6:00pm
Council continues to have contractors working across the city. Residents are encouraged to manage small debris like branches from their own properties where safe to do so, while Council focuses on higher risk areas including road-blocking slips and hazardous trees.
