Tauranga City Council Response To WorkSafe Investigation
Tauranga City Council acknowledges WorkSafe New Zealand’s decision to formally commence an investigation into work health and safety matters relating to the tragic landslide at Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park on 22 January 2026.
Council is fully cooperating with WorkSafe and will continue to provide all information and assistance required to support a thorough and independent investigation.
We respect WorkSafe’s role in examining work-related matters under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and understand the importance of supporting this process to proceed carefully and methodically.
Chief Executive Marty Grenfell says:
“We welcome WorkSafe’s independent investigation and are committed to fully supporting that process.
This has been an incredibly difficult time for our community. Our thoughts remain with the victims, their whānau, and all those impacted by this devastating event.
It is essential that we understand what happened and whether anything could or should have been done differently.
We are equally committed to supporting the external review by Hon Paul Davison KC initiated by our Mayor and Councillors. An external review is a vital part of this process, allowing us to establish the facts so that we can carefully examine our processes and ensure we continue to strengthen our approach to safety and risk management. Transparency and learnings are critical as we move forward.”
Tauranga City Council recognises that WorkSafe’s investigation is underway and will make no further statements on the investigation at this time.
