Information For Voters About DCC By-Election Candidates

Dunedin (Wednesday, 18 March 2026) – Voters in Ōtepoti Dunedin can now find more information about the candidates vying for the role of councillor in the upcoming Dunedin City Council by-election.

The by-election was called after the unexpected death of Councillor Jules Radich in January. Voting will open from 10 April, and the polls will close at midday on 12 May 2026.

As in last year’s local election, voters can now watch short videos of by-election candidates answering key questions. All 14 candidates standing in the by-election were offered the opportunity to take part, and 12 opted to participate in the filming.

The candidates were asked the same three questions: what are your top priorities for Dunedin, why do you think you are right for the role of councillor, and what do you see as the biggest opportunity on the horizon for Dunedin?

Along with candidate statements and photos, the videos are now online at View the 2026 by-election candidates - Dunedin City Council. The videos are also available as a playlist at Dunedin City Council - YouTube.

DCC Deputy Electoral Officer, Robyn Dillon, says a lack of information about candidates is one reason people say they don’t vote.

“The videos offer voters a chance to find out more about those standing for election, in addition to the public statements and photos the candidates provide,” she says.

“We have strong turnout of candidates standing in this by-election and we want to see as many eligible voters casting their ballots as possible. Every vote matters, so be sure to have your say on who should join the Council table.”
