Flooding Affecting Northland Roads
We are already seeing impacts across the state highway network and Far North District due to the current severe weather event in Northland.
Multiple roads are closed due to flooding and proactive safety measures. Driving is hazardous – only travel if necessary with the weather set to worsen this afternoon.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is working with lifelines and emergency services, with crews actively responding and monitoring the network.
Current closures and conditions:
- SH1 Mangamuka – ROAD CLOSED due to flooding.
- SH1 Mangamuka Gorge – ROAD CLOSED as a proactive safety measure.
- Kaitaia–Awaroa Road via Broadwood – ROAD CLOSED (Far North District Council).
- SH10 Kaeo – Surface flooding. Currently OPEN WITH CAUTION, but may close at short notice. Crews are on site monitoring conditions.
- SH10 / SH11 Puketona – Surface flooding present.
Northland Journey Manager Kingston Brands says; “If you have to head out – be prepared because road conditions can change quickly. Expect hazards on the road ahead, there could be trees down, slips or water on the road.
“And a reminder – do not attempt to drive through flood water. It can be extremely dangerous if your vehicle gets trapped.”
Road users should expect there will further closures at short notice.
