Hamilton City Council is asking the community for feedback on proposals to reintroduce two-hours free on-street parking in the central city and increase the Hamilton Gardens entry price.

Council’s proposing to simplify parking in the central city, based on two-hours free onstreet parking and one zone. The proposed changes would apply only to on-street short-stay parking and would not affect all day or off-street parking areas.

Mayor Tim Macindoe said the proposal is intended to make life a little easier for Hamiltonians, while supporting the revitalisation of our city.

“Exciting things are happening in Hamilton, and we want to see residents and visitors enjoying them, and in doing so, actively supporting the people, local service providers, businesses, and hospitality providers that keep the heart of our city running.

We’ve heard clearly that the current CBD parking model causes confusion and anxiety, deterring people from venturing into town. This proposed change responds directly to what the community has asked for,” said Mr Macindoe.

Council is also asking for feedback on the proposal to increase the entry price for nonHamiltonians to the Enclosed Gardens at Hamilton Gardens from $20 to $27.50. Entry would remain free for Hamilton residents and ratepayers, and anyone under 16 years of age. This would be the first increase to the entry fee since it was set in 2023.

In addition, Council is consulting on changes to Planning Guidance and Urban and Spatial Planning fees and charges, and their draft Financial Contributions Policy.

Council is forecasting $68.8 million in revenue from all fees and charges in 2026/27, which would make up around 18% of its total revenue.

Consultation for the proposed changes runs until Sunday 3 May 2026.

Throughout April, Hamilton City Councillors will be out and about at libraries and community centres hosting informal dropin sessions. These sessions offer a relaxed opportunity to ask questions, share ideas, or raise local issues directly with councillors.
