Whangarei District Council Advises Caution Until Cyclone Vaianu Wind-Warning Has Passed
Whangarei District Council Chief Executive Simon Weston says that multiple hazards remain from Cyclone Vaianu, with stormwater systems running at full capacity.
“With sodden soils and heavy winds, there is still a risk of tree-falls and an elevated risk of land-slips near roads. The MetService severe wind-warning is in place until 3:00pm, and waterways will take some time to recede.”
Heavy rain has closed 8 roads to flooding in Whangārei District, with many more partially closed or accessible by 4WD-only. The Council has published a live map of road closures on its website:

At this time, all closures have been caused by flooding of rivers or streams. Swollen waterway levels are expected to slowly recede until high tide, around 3:00pm Sunday 12 April 2026, after which they will recede more rapidly.
Locals are advised to take caution if traveling, be prepared to stop or turn back, and to report issues directly to the Council on 09-430-4200.
