Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Chair Welcomes Clarity On Local Government Direction, Focus Remains On Hawke’s Bay’s Future

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Chair Sophie Siers says today’s Government announcement on simplifying local government provides welcome clarity for the council and its partner organisations, and allows the region to stay focused on the work that matters most.

“We’re pleased to see a clear structure emerge. That certainty means we can keep our focus where it needs to be - on delivering the long-term planning and investment that underpins Hawke’s Bay’s wellbeing and security,” says Chair Siers.

“Our work in flood protection, land management, and water resilience is fundamental to the future of this region. These are long-term challenges that require consistency, strong relationships, and a clear sense of direction.”

Chair Siers says the Government’s signalling toward unitary models reinforces the importance of regional alignment and collaboration.

“With that direction in mind, we are keeping our focus sharply aligned on working alongside and supporting our mayors to explore what the best model looks like for Hawke’s Bay’s future.”

“This isn’t just about structure, it’s about ensuring we build a system that strengthens our ability to respond to risk, support our communities, and protect the natural environment we all depend on.”

She says Hawke’s Bay Regional Council remains committed to working constructively with local government partners and communities throughout the process.

“Our responsibility remains the same - to plan for the long term, to build resilience across our land and water systems, and to support the wellbeing of our communities. That’s where our energy is, and that’s where it will stay.”
