Hawke’s Bay Meeting Focuses On Future Of Food Production Following Plant Closures
Hastings and Central Hawke’s Bay mayors hosted a meeting with growers, processors and sector representatives last week to discuss the future of food production and processing in the region, in light of the recent decisions made by Heinz Wattie's and McCain Foods to close facilities.
While participants were clear that business decisions were for businesses to make, there was strong agreement the closures reflect a broader set of pressures facing food production and processing.
Hastings Mayor Wendy Schollum said the meeting provided a clearer picture of the challenges facing the sector.
“Energy came through strongly as a key issue - both in terms of cost and certainty. Businesses need confidence that energy will be available, reliable and affordable before they can invest for the future.”
Central Hawke’s Bay Mayor Will Foley said the discussion highlighted pressures for food production.
“There were a number of issues raised, including water security, infrastructure, policy and regulatory settings, consenting challenges, and the overall cost and complexity of doing business.
“We need to be finding a pathway forward for them.”
The mayors said the meeting was an important step in bringing together regional perspectives and ensuring these issues are clearly understood.
“This is about the future of food production in Hawke’s Bay and ensuring the region remains viable and competitive,” Mayor Schollum said.
“It also raises broader questions about food security, supermarkets, margins, how much value is getting back to growers and the long-term sustainability of the sector.”
The mayors said the discussion will help inform upcoming engagement with central Government, including the Primary Production Select Committee’s upcoming briefing into the closures and their impacts on businesses and communities. Green Party MP Steve Abel is visiting the region today to discuss the issue, and the Hon Todd McClay, Minister of Agriculture, has also requested to meet with mayors during his visit to Hawke’s Bay tomorrow.
