SHELL DIESEL "AOK" AND MEETING ALL NZ SPECIFICATIONS

Shell wants to reassure its customers that all of its diesel is "a.o.k" and meeting all New Zealand specifications.

Shell was responding to reports that Challenge fuel does not meet New Zealand specifications for flashpoint temperature. Diesel is required to have a flashpoint of 61C, but tests of samples taken from Challenge's Timaru tank reveal a flashpoint of 57c.

Low flash point diesel can cause poor performance, overheating, and the destruction of fuel gasket systems, and seals. Fuel leaks are also possible. Explosion is a risk for those using diesel as a burning fuel in furnaces.

Meeting the legal standards for all fuel is a matter which Shell takes extremely seriously.

"We have all the checks and balances in place to ensure that these kinds of problems are not experienced by Shell. We are always supplied at flash points above the minimum. It is a safety issue that is essential for the well being of customers, and a legal compliance issue that demonstrates the safety and integrity of our organisation."

Shell diesel has a flashpoint of 70-90, well above the minimum standard of 61C.
