Import News: Parallel Importing Study

Import News from the Importers Institute

A ban on parallel imports of books and CDs will be announced soon, according to National MP Katherine Rich.

"The ban will force libraries to buy books through exclusive New Zealand agents who will have monopoly rights to certain titles, rather than dealing directly with overseas publishers as libraries do now," Ms Rich said.

Dr Lynne Eagle, of Massey University, is conducting a study on parallel importing and seeks your views:

"Parallel importing has been permitted since mid 1998. There have been numerous claims regarding the potential impact on importers, retailers and consumers, but there has been very little research undertaken to determine what the actual impact has been. This study is aimed at evaluating exactly what impact parallel importing has had on importers and the brands they control, whether as an official brand importer or as a parallel importer.

"In collating your responses, we guarantee that no individual or organisation will be able to be identified and only aggregate results will be used in reporting the study's findings."
