Mainland creates 19 new jobs in South Island
Mainland Stevedoring Limited announced today that it has created 19 new jobs in the South Island since it began operations last November. Greg Dickson, Director of Mainland, said the company was actively seeking five more workers to complete its first stage of expansion. "Once we have completed our recruitment drive and trained all the workers in our operating procedures, we will have a complete South Island-based crew to load ships," said Mr Dickson.
"I am delighted that we have attracted such a high calibre of recruits, despite the appalling intimidation including death threats," said Mr Dickson. "I call on the WWU and its supporters to stop the intimidation of local people who simply want the right to choose who they work for and which union represents them."
Mr Dickson said the company was keen to expand further to take advantage of the huge growth in timber exports expected over the next decade.
